Sonnet Pci Cards For Mac Pro 2013 Increase Speed
Apps are installed on one, though i am wondering whether to combine them as a RAID 0 volume in order to speed up apps and use for video files in use during each editing session. At the end of the session these would be moved to a 4TB RAID 0 volume. Two internal Barracudas. Backup will be via FireWire to two GoFlex 2TB drives, also in RAID 0. I hope that sounds sensible. Also, i have contacted Sonnet, asking them if they know of a concrete example of a Mac Pro using the Tempo Pro PCIe card (suitable for the Mac Pro 1.1 with its SATA 1.0 PCI slots) with the two SATA III SSDs installed on it. This might mess up use of the SSDs for apps, but i'll deal with that depending upon their response.

This went smoothly, and the new RAID-5 volumes were mounted. Finally, I started a large file-copy operation to back up my Movie collection from an internal 5TB hard drive to the external RAID-5 volume. I used 'ChronoSync' for this operation. And this is where the nightmare began. At first, one disk magically disconnected, then another, then another. I would reboot, restart the file-copy operation, only to have the disks eject themselves randomly.

3) PCIe Gen II Interface - 4 lanes - has two very significant advantages. -- If you have a PCIe slot open on your backplane, you can add 2 SSD's to your storage without changing your magnetic hard disk configuration -- If your computer is old enough to have only a SATA II interface, like mine, the PCIe interface (4 Gbps per lane after 8b/10b encoding - or 16 Gbps for 4 lanes) is so fast that it easily accommodates SATA III (6 Gbps) transfer rates for multiple drives.

My granddaughter has arrived--typing this thread is now also tricky.:-) Here is a question that I haven't found an answer to--how do the speeds of daisy-chaining multiple, single Thunderbolt drives on an iMac (6Gb/s PCIe) compare to other options on the iMacor to HD storage or RAIDs on the 3Gb/s Mac Pro? Does Thunderbolt on iMac perform better than adding any type of external drive RAID system for video editing on the iMac? One day I will move editing to iMac. I am probably in the budget range of 'Enthusiast' so maybe the OWC QX2 for video editing and storage at this time with Pegasus price-range in the future. I am likely going for a combination of SSDs for the music sample libraries with an additional PCIe card for OS and apps. Current HDs as storage.
Looking at the Mac Upgrades site doesn't look hopeful for pre-2009 Mac Pros: Perhaps another alternative? Thanks for your help. Much appreciated. If i manage to upgrade this Mac Pro 1.1 within my constrained budget, i will be reporting back on exactly how it was done to anyone interested. I'm producing unfunded video learning resources for school teachers, hence the need to think v carefully before any more unecessary expense. The Sonnet seems v sensibly priced if it can boost performance. Though, of course, not (apparently) on pre-2009 Mac Pros.
To write an SSD, it must first be erased. The erase can happen 'as needed,' which slows write performance, or 'in advance' using TRIM. TRIM is a batch operation that ensures that the blocks freed up by the OS when a file is deleted are erased automatically to preserve the best possible write performance. In the process of moving data around, the SSD controller erases blocks that it has completely consolidated. So, eventually, the blocks do tend to get erased. The key point is that if you want the benefits of TRIM it is easy to get it using Cindori.org Trim Enabler, and an alternate boot OS. Periodically, (once a month?) I boot on my alternate OS, enable TRIM, and then run diskutil repairVolume /Volumes/.

There are very few PCI cards available to help, and even fewer that work with Mac. After a couple of false starts, I landed here. You can find several complaints about this card on the reviews here. According to the sparse documentation that comes with the card, only a few card readers are supported (I have a Lexan that works fine with it) and NO USB2 disks will work. Even USB3 disks will give you some issues. Download imovie for mac 10.10 5. I've begun to use a with this card.
